Trek Difficulty, Explained
SO[u]LE MATES Team · 3 February 2026 · 4 min read
We grade every trek across four levels, based on distance, elevation gain, terrain, and how forgiving the trail is if you need to slow down.
Easy
Short distances, gentle grades, well-marked trails. Suitable for most fitness levels and often good for families.
Moderate
Longer days or steeper sections, but nothing that requires prior trekking-specific fitness - general fitness and comfortable footwear go a long way.
Challenging
Sustained climbs, longer distances, and terrain that punishes poor footwear or pacing. Prior trekking experience recommended.
Difficult
Steep, long, and often technical in sections. These treks are for people who already know how their body handles multi-hour climbs.
