How to Choose Your First Trek
SO[u]LE MATES Team · 10 February 2026 · 5 min read
Start with distance and duration, not the name of the peak. A short, well-shaded day trek will teach you more about whether you enjoy trekking than a summit push ever will.
Look at the fitness level, honestly
Every trek on this site lists a fitness requirement - low, moderate, or high. Match it to your actual current fitness, not the fitness you're planning to have by next month.
Pick a season that's forgiving
Post-monsoon and winter treks tend to have clearer trails and cooler walking conditions. Save monsoon trekking for once you know how your body handles wet, slippery terrain.
Go with people, not just a group
A first trek is easier with at least one person you already trust. It changes how you experience the tired, uncertain parts of the climb.
