Why This Trek

Kolukkumalai

Kolukkumalai isn't a trek in the usual sense - the rugged estate roads are jeep-only, and walking the full route isn't permitted. What makes it worth including is the last stretch: a short, easy walk from the jeep drop-off to a ridge where you watch the sunrise break through cloud cover with tea bushes running off in every direction. It's less about exertion and more about being in the right place before anyone else is awake.

Before You Book

  • Forest access may require a valid permit.
  • Authorised guide support may be mandatory.
  • Departure depends on current route availability.
  • Weather and wildlife conditions may affect access.
  • Route and timings can change for safety reasons.
  • Camping is only offered where currently permitted.
  • Government ID may be required for permit registration.
  • Final confirmation is issued only after operational verification.

The Trail

Jeeps leave Suryanelli well before dawn and climb a rough estate track for close to two hours. From the drop-off point, a short walking stretch of a kilometre or so - flat to gently graded, along the ridge above the tea factory - leads to the viewpoint. Access beyond the jeep track is restricted; this is a sunrise-and-tea-estate experience, not a wilderness trek, and we describe it that way rather than oversell it.

  • Sunrise over the Western Ghats from the world's highest organic tea plantation
  • A working tea factory and estate slopes that never quite flatten out
  • A short, easy walk rather than a demanding climb - the terrain does the rest

Itinerary

Leave in the dark by 4x4 jeep up the estate track, walk the short stretch to the ridge for sunrise, visit the tea factory, then descend and head back.

Safety

Cancellation Policy

A ₹1,000 Booking Advance secures your booking request. Final confirmation is issued only after operational and permit verification. The advance is non-refundable and non-transferable, as it blocks your spot in the group.

If we cancel a trek due to weather, safety, or forest department restrictions, you get a full refund or a free reschedule.

Notes

The walkable portion of this route is short and easy by design - the jeep track above Suryanelli is not open to foot traffic. Duration and stay details are provisional until we've run this ourselves.

Sustainability

Kolukkumalai's estate roads already carry heavy jeep traffic - we keep our group sizes modest and stick to the designated walking stretch rather than adding pressure elsewhere on the slope.
