Why This Trek

Kodaikanal: Dolphin's Nose & Pillar Rocks

This is a short trek, but it earns its place - the trail drops out of Vattakanal's pine groves into open terraced hillside, and the payoff is a genuine cliff edge, not a paved viewpoint. It suits people who want real forest underfoot without committing a whole day to it, and it's a good add-on to a longer Palani Hills weekend.

Before You Book

  • Forest access may require a valid permit.
  • Authorised guide support may be mandatory.
  • Departure depends on current route availability.
  • Weather and wildlife conditions may affect access.
  • Route and timings can change for safety reasons.
  • Camping is only offered where currently permitted.
  • Government ID may be required for permit registration.
  • Final confirmation is issued only after operational verification.

The Trail

The route starts at Vattakanal village, a short drive from Kodaikanal town, and descends through pine forest and terraced slopes before opening onto the rock outcrop at Dolphin's Nose. Pillar Rocks' granite pillars sit on the same trail network and are usually covered on the same outing. The path is a mix of forest track and rock, with some loose footing - manageable for a moderately fit trekker, not technical.

  • Pine forest and terraced slopes on the descent from Vattakanal
  • The Dolphin's Nose rock outcrop, a sheer edge with valley views
  • Pillar Rocks' granite spires along the same trail system

Notes

Distance and duration are provisional until we've run this route ourselves and confirmed current trail access with local guides.

Sustainability

Pillar Rocks and Dolphin's Nose see heavy day-tripper traffic from the paved viewpoints nearby - we route through the quieter forest trail from Vattakanal instead, in smaller groups.
