Why This Trek

Friendship Peak

Most treks in this catalog end where the walking gets hard. Friendship Peak is where the walking stops being the point - the last stretch to the top is a roped climb on steep snow and ice, with crampons and an ice axe, not a steeper trail. It's genuinely one of the harder things we're considering offering, and we'd rather say that plainly than dress it up as a big trek with a nice view at the end.

Before You Book

  • Forest access may require a valid permit.
  • Authorised guide support may be mandatory.
  • Departure depends on current route availability.
  • Weather and wildlife conditions may affect access.
  • Route and timings can change for safety reasons.
  • Camping is only offered where currently permitted.
  • Government ID may be required for permit registration.
  • Final confirmation is issued only after operational verification.

The Trail

The route leaves Manali for Solang Valley and the Dhundi trailhead, then follows the Beas Kund approach through Bakarthach meadow to a base camp near or below Beas Kund itself, around 3,600m. From there the route climbs to an advance base camp or high camp near 4,200m, used for technical training and as the launch point for the summit day. The push to the 5,289m summit crosses sustained 40-50 degree snow and ice slopes on rope, with an exposed final ridge - this is roped, crampon-and-ice-axe climbing, not a steep walk, even though no prior mountaineering certification is required to attempt it.

  • A genuine mountaineering summit at 5,289m, reachable without prior technical climbing certification
  • Roped travel on real snow and ice, taught and supervised through the climb itself
  • The Beas Kund approach, a glacial basin below the Pir Panjal peaks that's also a trek destination in its own right
  • A 360-degree summit view across the Pir Panjal and toward the Dhauladhar and Kullu-Lahaul ranges on a clear day

Who Is This Trek For?

Fitness level required: high. Group size runs 4–8 people. Age range: 18–45 years.

A valid medical fitness certificate is mandatory for every participant. This is a technical climb above 5,000m, not a graded trek - it is not suitable for anyone with cardiac, respiratory, or high-altitude-related conditions. Prior high-altitude trekking experience above 4,000m is strongly recommended before attempting it.

Inclusions & Exclusions

  • Forest and mountaineering permit coordination and qualified climbing guide
  • Technical training on rope work, crampon and ice-axe technique
  • All camping equipment, trek meals, and shared technical climbing gear (rope, anchors)
  • Road transfers between Manali and Dhundi
  • Travel to and from Manali
  • Personal trekking and climbing gear (boots, harness, gloves, etc.)

  • Summit-day weather and snow/ice conditions are assessed each morning before the push begins, with turnaround authority resting entirely with the climb leader
  • Trek leader carries a first-aid kit and satellite communication where network is unavailable

Permits

Friendship Peak requires a Himachal Pradesh mountaineering/forest permit, typically arranged through the Kullu Divisional Forest Officer's office or a registered expedition operator; foreign nationals may additionally need an Indian Mountaineering Foundation permit, and sources differ on exactly when that applies. We're treating the permit process as unverified until we've confirmed the current requirements and fees directly with the Kullu DFO and IMF ourselves.

Cancellation Policy

A ₹1,000 Booking Advance secures your booking request. Final confirmation is issued only after operational and permit verification. The advance is non-refundable and non-transferable, as it blocks your spot in the group.

If we cancel a trek due to weather, safety, or forest department restrictions, you get a full refund or a free reschedule.

Notes

This is a technical mountaineering peak climb, not a standard trek - the summit day involves sustained 40-50 degree roped snow-and-ice climbing with crampons, ice axe, harness and rope, taught on-route rather than requiring prior certification. That puts it beyond what a standard trekking group setup can safely run; we'd need qualified mountaineering guides, technical gear logistics, and our own permit confirmation in place before this could move past coming-soon.

Sustainability

The Beas Kund basin and surrounding glaciated terrain are fragile, high-traffic ground for Manali-area climbs and treks alike - we'll cap group size and stick to designated camps once we run this route ourselves.
